Hi guys -

I'm bouncing over from the 29-32 crowd. I have a '32 5W coupe that I rebuilt about 11 years ago. The local mechanic here is offering a '41 Special Deluxe that was pulled out from somewhere and which he traded for a truck; asking $4,000 with 93K on the odometer, so, it could be a victory for the antiquers over the rodders if I bring it home and get it drivable.

I'm interested, and any engine issues won't bother me since I've worked on a stovebolt six already. But the thing that gives me pause is not knowing much history on it, so I have no idea if the transmission or rear end is going to be good or not. How much heavy thinking should I make about what I might be getting into (costs, hassles, heartaches) if any of the drivetrain reveals problems?

41s are nearly as easy as the '32 to work on and many parts available. One of the most popular in the VCCA. Much improved mechanically that can be driven at modern highway speeds.

ED,
My suggestion is to pass on the 41 unless it is a Special Deluxe coupe, conv. or station wagon. Then only if it is all there with no major bodywork to be done and you can do all the bodywork, painting, mecanical and upholstry work youself. You may (read likely) be better off adding to the 4K and buying one that is already complete and ready to go.

A 41 is a great car but, as in all old cars, restroration can cost big bucks!

Good luck,
