My wife found a 1927 Sears catalog today at the flea market. Of course I quickly flipped to the automotive section. Guess what parts cost back then?

490 bumper $7.45
Motometer $3.40
Klaxon $2.45
Touring car top $5.25
Seat covers $3.45 (front or rear)
Radiator $8.39
Battery $8.35
Piston $1.79
Accessory heater $3.98
Accessory valve cover -58 cents
Accessory air cleaner $3.85
Four wheels $16.00
Axle $1.10
Driveshaft $2.40
Tire $5.95
Walnut steering wheel $1.62
Champion plug -55cents
Set plug wires -17 cents
Closed car top $2.35

A set of four fenders was $16. However, they were only available for 1923 and later Chevys. I guess 490 parts shortages started early!

Hey.....My first full time job was in Brooklyn New York in 1956 in a sheet metal factory, they made stove pipes and other duct work, when I was 16 YO. It payed me 50 cents a hour with no benefits....Were the country is trying to return to again if some folks get their way.....Ed

A job on a farm might have got you 25 cents a day and a meal. A "day" consisting of starting work at 5am- till the sun went down. A lot of guys were glad to get that 25 cents! Even at $490 for a new 490 , that was huge money to most people.

Below is a letter from a F### dealer in 1929 to a client offering servicing with fixed prices.

If only prices were still as low:

New Fenders $3.50 to $5.00, labour to fit $1.00 to $2.50

Brakes $1.25 plus $5.00 labour

Front axle overhaul $5.00

Rear axle overhaul $7.50

Valve grind $4.00

Pistons and Rings $7.00

If only...........

Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great"

I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

Well. the search for parts finally begins. The long awaited 490 has arrived, as I posted in the 1912-1928 section, along with this youtube link to the delivery process:
