 Can anyone tell me the thickness of an oil filler cap gasket? Mine disintegrated and I can't find the piece I kept for that dimension. I know they are cheap to buy but I hate to pay 8 or 10 bucks shipping for a $1.50 item. Since I have lots of cork stock of all sizes, I thought I would make one but I need to know the thickness for a proper seal. Chevy's of the 40's has the inner and outer dimensions but not the thickness. Thanks. Beamer

I'll go out and check mine in a bit. I agree that making your own is a lot smarter than buying one if you already have the cork.

Beamer Mine was about 1/8' thick on my 38 Master but it was starting to fall apart so rather than have pieces fall down into the oil tube I scrapped it out and replaced it with a piece of rubber roofing I cut out to match and glued into the cap...It fit real good and you can feel it seat and get tight when you turn it on Good Luck....ED

I'd have to agree with the 1/8" estimate. I pulled mine but I couldn't remove the old gasket for an accurate measurement without destroying it.

I also agree with 1/8. I have the cork also and it tightens nicely.

In the later years the gasket that came with the Genuine Chevrolet complete engine gasket set was made from neoprene rubber and lasted much longer than the cork

 Sorry for the delay in my thanks to everyone but I am still battling an excruciating sciatica problem in my right leg and therefore not on the computer a lot. In any case, many thanks to all the responses. They told me what I needed to know. One of these days I will come across a small piece of cork (part of the old gasket) wrapped in a piece of paper and wonder where it came from but by then, I won't need it. Beamer
