Hey all, I've replaced the brushes in my starter on my '27 Capitol. But now that I put it back together, the only response I get is a hum from the starter and a CHARGE direction on my Volt gauge. Could I have possibly switched something inside? There are very few moving parts, but a short or crossed wire has to be the culprit. Does anyone know where I could get a schematic for this starter?

Make sure that the wires on the two field coil terminals are not touching the starter case.

Did you install the brushes in the right direction so that they will ride on the comm. correctly?

Did you turn the armature?

Wires are not touching the case.

I have to check on the brushes, I didn't know about being directional.

As to turning, do you mean on a lathe or by hand? It will turn freely when I put it back togather. I used 1000 grit sandpaper to clean the copper part of the armature. Also used razor blade to clean in the cracks.

Thanks JYD

Don't worry...the horse belongs there and it shows up automatically when you type the Junkyard Dog's initials.

By turning the armature I mean turning the comm. end of the armature on a lathe to get it true.

Also, make sure that the all of the insulation that is wrapped around the field coils is still in good condition and that there are no bare spots on the field coils touching the starter housing.

Not sure if you solved the problem yet or not. Sounds like a direct short, first and easiest check is the thru-bolts (long bolts used to hold starter motor together). Pull one at a time out and see if short goes away. Feel free to contact me for any help or advice.
