Hello again.

My 31 engine has 140 miles since the rebuild.
If I drive a few miles and park for 5 minutes, then start it again the motor stumbles and wants to quit. If I pump the gas and get the r.p.m.s up it seems to settle down and after a little while and I can drop the r.p.m.s without it stalling.

It never has this problem cold. It is not excessivly hot outside, maybe 85 degrees F. at most. We do have ethonal in our gas up here. I have a 2 blade fan. My temp gage doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

First suggestion......get your temp. gauge fixed.

Our 1984 Oldsmobile has the exact same problem that you describe because we have Ethanol as well. In cooler weather the car doesn't have this issue, but above 80 degrees the car stumbles and dies upon a hot restart. After a high RPM for a while, when the cool gas in the tank gets to the carburetor, the car settles down and idles perfectly. In the winter time this issue doesn't exist.

My second suggestion would be to get some non-Ethanol gas if it is available anywhere and then try it. The non-Ethanol gas will probably cure your problem.

By the way, all of my cars hate the Ethanol gasoline.

Good luck!

I dont know why they dont take that crap out of the gas. The stuff is destructive and useless. If i wanted that, i'd run water and gas in the tank.

1931 Chevrolet Cabriolet
1931 Chevrolet Special Sedan
1962 Alfa Romeo Spider
1972 Alfa Romeo Berlina
2000 GMC 2500

Ethanol has never given me any problems with any of these vehicles.

Alcohol boils at a lower temperature than gasoline so ethanol is more likely to cause vapor lock problems. That being said, I like ethanol for most of my vehicles but not all of them. patriot

It will be interesting to see if that helps johnmc as I don't have any problems with the ethanol in my vehicals or small engines here in Minnesota but how am I too know if they wouldn't last longer with straight gas. willy

As JYD says, above 80F is part of the problem; in Minnesota do you ever get above 60F? LOL! I know in Nova Scotia I'm real happy any day it gets to 80F, like about 5 days a year.

If in doubt about ethanol you can pay $4/qt at home depot or less if you buy at small engine repair shops in bulk for ethanol free gas or pre-mix which is a must for storing 2stroke equipment or old cars depending on your method for storage

Totaly unrelated to chevys but several of my boating friends have found excess water in there tanks after winter storage. Boats run in water but not really good on water ...
