hi guys, I have a question or should I say I need help. my amp meter aways shows just below the center line on the discharge side, when I turn lights on it goes down to the 1st line on discharge. then it will bounce back and forth when I put on the turn signals. I've never seen the gauge on the charging side of the amp meter, my battery has not gone dead but sometimes it cranks slowly. I cleaned all the connections on the voltage regulator cleaned the battery terminals. could the wires be crossed on the back of the amp meter? and thats why it dosent go to the charging side of the amp meter?
thank you
Jack

Check the generator and cut-out or regulator. Your description is typical for generator not working.

This is a great, simple flow chart. My question would be does your tractor and '41 Chevy both have the same ground, negative or positive? If they do, I don't know why this would not work for either. If one has a positive ground and the other has a negative ground, then I wouldn't know. I hope someone who does know answers your question. This would be a very good diagram to have if it works on a 6v car. Beamer

yes the tractor has positive ground, so that chart will not work then, is there a way that I can check the regulator to see if it is bad before I go buy a new one. I dont have a amp meter, I do have a volt meter
thanks guys for your replies

With my limited auto electric knowledge I think that flow chart would work on all 3 post regulator (6 and 12 volt) systems. Someone like JYD who has more experience than me may like to correct me.

Tony,
I agree. The chart will work with either positive or negative ground systems. Yes the electrons flow in one direction but it does not matter when testing an electrical system unless a diode or other one way device is installed incorrectly. As long as there is a complete loop those little electron fellas (or gals or both) will figure how to get around.

I had the gen. and reg.tested and both were bad, so I had the generator rebuilt and I replaced the voltage regulator now it charges great. I hope that the diagram I posted will work on 6 volt negitive ground, it sure makes testing pretty easy,it worked great for me on my Farmall Cub with 6 volt positive ground.
thanks Jack
