Thought I would finish the story. Many thanks to all who posted helpful suggestions here and to Walt D and Chipper for their assistance. I purchased a rebuild kit (round shaft pump) from the filling station. Yesterday at a large show here in the west MI area I saw an old friend who's nickname is 'carburetor' because of the way he misspent his youth. Carburetors dad was also the best Carb mechanic in town years ago. After I explained the problem to him he said the type of car it is and the way it will get driven, it wouldn't hurt to set the float a little higher than spec. He felt that having a little less gas in the bowl would help with the flooding. Another friend who has a Corvair (talk about getting practice on carb's)came over today. As a precaution, and because I already had the kit available, we took the needle and seat from the new kit and installed it. It is a completely different design from the original, and because of the difference, it raised float about a 32nd of an inch. I drove it for varying distances three times this afternoon and after sitting for five minutes to a half hour it started. Could be that the needle and seat were worn, could be the float level. Long story, but I thought it might provide some insight for anyone having a similar problem.
