On my 54 motor I had the starter in the shop...said they put brushes in....won't kick in all the time...clicks a few times then will kick in....will a 216 starter work on the 235...it looks shorter and I don't want to put it on a screw something up....the starter shop is 60 miles away
Virg
PS this is a donor motor going in a 50 car
also the starter was doing the same thing before I took it in

You might need a new starter solenoid.

They probably want to sell you a new starter WITH a new solenoid. Some folks will tell you that you need both if one goes bad, but it just ain't so. Are you a doityerselfer? If you remove the solenoid from the starter and open it up, you may just need to clean up the contacts. Not sure if you can just turn the innards around on that one, but the Dawg oughta be able to set you straight on it. Not sure why he has gone to so many one word repies lately....

Why don't you just buy a new solenoid?

It can probably be soldered back on, but why was there a second time? Do you have a NAPA or Carquest or somewhat kinda parts store nearby? They seem to have a lot of parts that fit the '40s and '50s cars. Can you get a shop discount or know anyone who can?

You should invest in a shop manual ..... it will be an investment you will not regret.

Your starter shop should have detected a bad solenoid when they worked on your starter.

Seems to me if the starter clicks, the solinoid is working. If the solinoid (clicks)works, then the starter is not turning.
