Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great" I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

Sounds like I will get the 3077's!!
Do I have to take the carb off to remove a piece of trash in the needle/seat??
"If you take off the cover over the shaft then tap it gently with a screwdriver handle or similar. That should take care of the problem."
Not sure I understand?
Thanks,
Bruce

Hi,
With the carby still on,
1.unscrew the nut on the bottom of the brass bowl 2. Remove the bowl. 3. Remove the sliding pin holding the float, careful not to loose the pin or the needle when it drops out of the seat. 4. Now is when you give the housing a bit of a tap.
Good Luck
Ray

Ray,
Ain't that much money in Hollywood for Brad Pitt to play you...maybe try Richard Boone (Paladin...yeah, I know he is dead but the slogan sure would fit), Have spark plug, will travel! Ha, ha. BTW, I took the jalopy out today and she ran pretty dang nice with those 3076's. Not to bust your bubble but I'm gonna run what I got for a spell and see if I can git along without out puttin the 3077's in. The really encouraging thing is that she didn't run hot and the radiator didn't drip one drop! Yahoo.

Hi Jerry,
Do us both a favour. Put in a set of 77's and if they do not make a difference, I will take them off your hands at my cost.
That's how confident I am that you will be happy, I hope.
I, like you thought it would not make a difference. I ran the Champion 3076 eqivalent for 20 years. Then brother I saw the light.
Go on I dare you, at my expense.
Remember at our age we are not supposed to be closed minded.
Besides Sadie wants you to try them also, I know cause Grant's dog Bella told me yesterday.
So Jerry, what ya gunna do??
Cheers
Ray

Ray and all his 3077 followers,
Okay, Uncle! Geez already I'll do it, I'll do it. One question though, the last plug, nearest the firewall (#3 I think), that is a bugger to get out, do you have a special way of removing it that I don't know about? I practically had to remove the motor to get to it. Oh one more thang, how about sending me a rethreader so I won't have to buy one and can check those threads and not break a new plug trying to seat it properly!
tks, Jerry, putty in your hands...or maybe sucker for every new gimmic.

Jerry,
The bretheren welcomes you with open arms, and empty glasses.
I use a 24mm ring spanner, cut down to 9.5 inches long overall. Perfect fit for Autolites, which gets into all 4 plugs ok, but I believe in a truck the vac tank is a bit closer to the plug, anyway on 1, 2 and three I come in from the top, and 4 from up and under.
Would gladly send you my plug tap, but the postage would be more than its worth, and Sadie would bury it in the back yard, so I would never see it again.
Cheers
Ray

I too use a cut down ring spanner but it needs to be a "deep reach" with about 1" offset one from the bar as the ordinary ones with a small offset are are harder to use Chris

Ok, so I did not intentionally stir this up, but I can't wait to hear what Jerry thinks about the 3077's. Glad I bought an extra set..............
Thanks,

Hi Bruce,
I'm almost there and if I don't hurry up and do it, Ray has threatened to take the next flight from OZ to Tallahassee to make sure I do. Now thats scary enough for me to get a move on!
Here's where I am at. I went to the parts house and bought a threader "thing" (take it easy Junkyard, this is an entirely different thing and mine only has five transmissions, three steering wheels, a double reverse, with a double low gear, a skid plate underneath, push-button drive, a plowshare on the front, with one wheel only, and was found atop a light pole in Sweden). Oh yeah, the threader thingy is to run the threads deeper so that the new and improved plugs can seat further into the motor.
But I digress...Because I have a 1 ton, the darn vacuumn canister is almost sitting on top of the last plug so I will have to remove the canister, remove the plug, install the new plug and then re-install the vacuumn canister. The plugs take 45 seconds each and the canister is a 40 minute job. However, Ray has given me a great idea on how to make the canister an easy off-easy on project. So, just in case these wonder of all wonders #3077 plugs don't turn night into day, water into wine, and enable the truck to drive on water, I will be able to go back to the old #3076 plugs in only a few minutes.
I promise I will report back to y'all as soon as I have finished the job.
tks, Jerry

The of little faith,
Build it and they will come, no "Fit them and it will run"
Cheers

Hi Bruce,
I installed the 3077's last evening. I have to say that Ray WAS correct in how to re-do the vacuum canister (strap) so that in the future it would not be a problem removing it again (to get to #3 plug)! As for the plugs themselves, I set the gap at closer to 32 thous. rather than 30 as Ray suggested. No, not to be different, I had sent Ray a PM but didn't get it until this morning so I went on memory. I know, I know, I consider bad memory part of the aging process.
Anyhow, I started her up easily and made note that I could move the spark to full retard almost immediately and the hand throttle the same. She does idle fractionally fast but nothing to be alarmed at. I will watch and decide if I need to make any adjustments.
I drove around the neighborhood and a short jaunt out on the highway and she seemed to have more umph in 3rd gear than before, that is she had more power when accelerating in 3rd.
The really exciting thing to me is that she is not overheating like I was experiencing every time we went even for a short drive. A good radiator repair, checked out the water pump, a flush of the motor with diluted muratic acid, new anti freeze, new plugs (thanks Ray), and she is purring like a jungle cat! Like everyone else that has one of these classic ladies, there are always "other" things waiting to be done but at least the journey has begun and so far successfully. I was elated to have found this one in very good shape and fortunately for me didn't have to do a Grant frame off rust bust. Ultimately Grant will be much more experienced than I but heck I can always hire him! Ha,ha.
I say it again, this site and the folks on it are the best ever in sharing info and helping the newbies (and sometimes the oldies) with all their questions and in my case probably some dumb ones.
Thank you all, Jerry

Re your vac tank, a mate of mine moved it about 1 1/2" higher on the firewall to clear that back plug. He did it by placing the top bracket bottom support ring of the tank above the bracket. This also gives you a little more gravity for your fuel flow to carby. Chris
