How is the drag link assembled to the pitman arm and the steering arm on a 1931? I am looking at Page` but there doesn't seem to be enough room to fit all the parts in the sockets and no way to compress the springs.

Welcome to Chevy ChatII!! There are many, many people here to help you with your questions. If you haven't joined yet, might I suggest that you consider doing so. Just an awsome club and people here!!

To your question, the page # you talked about did not come through on your post. I am assuming that if you have a Chevy repair manual, that page # would be 100. Do you have this repair manual?? They are available at www.fillingstation.com at a reasonable cost and are invaluable. There are not very many parts on the ends, and they do fit just fine. The way the spring is compressed is through tightening the end plug as it screws into the drag link. There is a difference between the pitman arm end and the axle end as far as the parts being installed in the drag link. The repair manual does show this on page 100. Let me know if you don't have the manual and will try to lead you through the process.

Regarding "Page", VCCA13 might be referring to the Victor Page manual, "The Chevrolet Six" instead of the 1931 Chevrolet repair manual.

Based on his user name of VCCA13 and his VCCA member number listed in his profile, it appears that he is one of the first members of the VCCA from back in 1961.

Well, guys, thanks for the responses. First of all I am #13. I happened to be at the second meeting in 1961 when the decision was made to form the club. It was decided that the 12 people who attended the first meeting would be charter members and I just happened to be first in line to sign up.

I was referring to the Page` book. I have both the service manual and the book but I usually go to the book.

Now to the embarassing part. I have owned the car for 51 years and have worked on it off and on over the years. I was underneath it a few week ago and noticed that there was no cotter key on the drag link. Last week I tried to remedy that but could not even get the cotter key started with the plug in as tight as it would go. I messed around with it for the better part of a day and couldn't get either end installed because I could not compress the spring enough. Anyway, apparently I had taken the drag link apart sometime 30 to 40 years ago and cleaned it all up and re-installed it. The thing is -- I installed it backwards. The slotted holes for the balls are in defferent places on each end of the link. Turned it around, assembled it as per the book and it fit perfect.

Again, thanks for the responses. It's a good thing I am embarassemnt-proof.
