My little '36 pickup makes a loud growling sound at speed, especially when I go over a deviation in the road. I've replaced the "okie" bushing but no change. Sounds like the universal is ratling but I put a new one in and still the same noise. It's not there all the time but is quite loud whenever the truck moves up and down at certain speeds. The transmission shifts fine and seemed ok when I checked it out.

Have you checked your motor mounts?

I try to be the person my dog thought I was.

I pulled the u-joint and noticed some slight wear pattern on the back of the u-joint ball cover. I'll try grinding the rear of the joint so that it clears the inside back of the ball. Shimming the ball retainer probably wouldn't do anything since it has to fit snugly into the ball housing at the back of the trans. Anyone else have any experience with this?

That growling noise might be coming from the rear springs.
My 38 used to make a noise like that when going over rough places in the road or slight bumps or uneven surfaces....ED

I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED
