Hi gang, I am in need of a fair mechanic in the Des Plaines,IL area. I was going to a show last week and while driving i lost all accleration and the engine died. There is no spark at all. we removed the dist and it does turn freely. the cam however does not turn. We are told this would be about 10-12 labor and the guy has never done this before.
Please e-mail us at LLFD3@aol.com or call us at 847-299-5709. Any help would be greatly appreciated. John

Sounds as if the timing gears went out.A rather common problem. This will require pulling the radiator and the radiator shell etc. Then the balancer will need to be removed-puller required.Fortunatly on a 1936 the oil pan dosen't need to be removed to remove the front cover. Both timing gears should be replaced. The steel gear will pull off the crank shaft rather easily. The correct way to replace the fiber camshaft gear is to remove the shaft and press the gear off. This requires removing the rocker arms, push rods ,side cover and lifters. If it were mine I would break off the fiber gear, split the inner sleeve with a chisel to remove the old. Then drill and tap a 3/8" hole in the center of the cam shaft and pull the new gear on with a bolt-or stud and nut. Will eleminate removeing side cover, rocker arms etc. The front plate on the engine should also be removed and the oil passage to the camshaft oiler cleaned. This becoming plugged up causes many gear failures.f the engine looks dirty inside would also suggest removing oil pan , cleaning it and the oil pump screen.
