I know it was discussed before, but I can't find it.
I have my ignition switch disassembled, but I can't find a key number anywhere. ???? Where is that number?

The only place I know it was for sure is on the key. My cylinder didn't have the number on it either.

Not on the swich....on the door lock shaft going into the lock cyl.... So do I need to remove the lock cylinder from the door handle? Or do I remove the door handle and pull the shaft from the inside? It turns out that my ignition switch isn't worn so that any key works in it. It was so dirty inside that the "tumblers" were stuck, so I don't want to put it back together until I have a working key for it. I don't have a key that will open the door lock. Can a lock smith make a key to fit the cylinder? I had one come out and make one for a modern car one time but don't know if they can do it with the older ones. It seems like he had inserted a key made of a soft material that picked up the size and shape of the indents.

It depends on the locksmith. One familiar with the old locks should be easily able to make you a key.

Problem is that there are only two real "locksmiths" left in the world that know what they are doing....and one of them just died!

most gm sidebar locks from 1935 up have a 4 digit code stamped on the outside of the plug which is what holds the tumblers, when you have the code it will then give you the key no for that lock, if down through the years someone changed the tumblers in the plug, then the key no may not work in that lock, sometimes the code nos are hard to see and decipher, but the code should be the same for the ignition and the door locks, and for the glove box and the trunk. If you get the code I might be able to give you the key no for that code. It will only be on the lock plug, not on any handles ect. Dennis
