In the often seen picture with Spencer Tracy and another gentleman standing next to a 1941 Chevrolet station wagon, I was wondering the following"

a. Who is the other gentleman?

b. Is that a Campbell body station wagon or the other one (Cantrell?).

c. Why does the car sport 1940 Shark Teeth rims if they were a no, no on the 41.

d. Why didn't the car have the 1941 wheel discs on it?

e. Was this a promotional picture that was to be used to lure folk to the Chevrolet marquee and the showroom?

f. Did Spencer Tracy actually own a/that 41 Chevrolet station wagon?

e. Why did the car sport fog lights and didn't have the flying lady hood ornament?

f. How come the car didn't have whitewalls?

e. How come there was no woman in the picture? luv2

I figure if all you experts know so much about obscure facts as expressed on some accessories then maybe you know the answer to some of these questions. Grin.

While I'm not real serious here and just having some fun, I would like to know some of the answers, if you know. dance
Thanks,
Charlie computer

BTW: If someone could post a copy of the picture in question, that would be great. beermugs

The gentleman standing next to Spencer Tracy, in that picture was his Brother...DICK TRACY.
The rest I don't know....But I bet no Hollywood movie star, in the golden age of the movies would be caught dead in a Chevy...especially a Station Wagon..let alone buy one.

BTW....Back then they tried to get wealthy folks to buy them by calling them "Estate Wagons". "O Jeeves take the estate wagon and pick up Perceval at the train station".....ED

charlie,
if you look at the wood sides, they have a little bit of shape to them and are not sorta slab sided.
the wagon windows are a bit bigger.
this makes this a chevrolet built campbell body station wagon.
hope that helps.
as to fog lites, front fender trim, and no flying lady hood ornament. all you can say to that is, oh well!!!!!!! to each his own.least it don't have incorrect fender guides on it!!!!lololololol
happy flint to all.

Brother DICK Tracy!!???!! Shirley you jest!!!

Spencer Tracy DID have a brother, older by 4 years. Named CARROLL.

Info about Tracy Brothers - Spencer and Carroll

In the photo by the woodie, there is some resemblance. Might be brothers Spencer and Carroll. Who knows....Maybe....

As for the Campbell vs Cantrell, I can't tell from that angle. Presume Ritchie is correct.

As for Charlie's other questions, he'll have to come up with some answers by using the google box....

Bill.

The following can be verified in the March 1941 and the August 1941 Friends magazines. In April 1941 Chevrolet sponsored a contest where two people would win their choice of a new 1941 chevy any model they wanted. There were 10 rules one of which was that to enter you had to cut the entry form from the back of the Friends magazine and a review of the rules are in the August issue which stated" to refresh Friends readers minds, we herewith review the rules of the movie contest sponsored in the March issue of Friends magazine. Two Chevrolets were to be given away-one to the contestant whose entry was judged best, setting forth in 50 words or less his or her reasons for preferring one favorite movie star above all others. The second Chevrolet was to be awarded to the movie star who was named the favorite by the greatest number of contestants. The winning contestent and movie star were given their choice of any model chevrolet. Spencer Tracy won and selected a station wagon primarily for use around his ranch home. The picture is of him looking over his new station wagon just presented to him by W.G. Lewellen, Chevrolets assistant general sales manager. The other winner was Mrs. Harry B. Ogle, of Chico who had selected Mickey Rooney to write about and she chose a cameo cream convertible. The answers to the other questions about what came on the wagon might never be known. And it is a Campbell wagon. There are other pictures in the August Friends magazine about this contest. Hope this answers your question Charlie. Dennis

Speaking in Bowery Boys, Dead End Kids and East Side Gang (pick one, and I don't know if I got them right or not) 1941 lingo, "Gee, Dennis, that is swell! beermugs

I am amazed at the wealth of knowledge out there. Thanks to all of you who collected data back when it would have been simply tossed out and to you who have gathered excellent libraries and the willingness to share such obscure facts and general information. I, for one, really appreciate it when I learn things like you described above. There can't possibly be very many sources for this type information. yay

You just made my day! dance
Thanks,
Charlie computer

BTW: You, Richie, Chevgene, Ray, Ed, Tiny, MT, and a heap more never cease to amaze me with your knowledge about old Chevrolets. Keep up the good work.

BTW2: One of you needs to publish a book. I'd buy several copies. Yep. Would too.
