Virg,
I think they were to help prevent leakage more than anything else. Nonetheless, I would back off the manifold and get them in. Although they seem to be spring loaded you may be able to spread them some so that fit the head a little tighter and thereby not so easy to displace when mounting the manifold. auto

I think they help transfer heat, also. But I'm not sure otherwise why they are there. I just know that they generally don't make for much of a problem and I'd rather have them in than out. dance
Good luck,

Before you install the manifold rings take them to a bench grinder and chamfer the outer edge of the rings a little on both sides.
That will make them easier to install Good Luck....ED

Virg,

Don't you have a later model 235 in your car?? If so, and you have the 235 intake manifold port rings, and if you are using the 216 intake manifold, the 235 port rings will not go into the 216 manifold as the 235 intake ports on the head are larger than the 216's.

Just a thought here.

Port rings do smooth out airflow from intake to head as there is little offset with the use of them.

The rings help seal the intake manifold to head. They also help aline the manifold gasket.
