Hello, In this 1948 the transmission shifts nicely in all 4 gears. At idle there is no noticeable transmission noise either with the clutch engaged or not. When accelerating thru 1st, 2nd, and 3rd there is whine that seems to get louder as time goes by. The whine is still there when decelerating with the clutch engaged but disappears when the clutch is disengaged. Previously the transmission had been bench-checked and all parts appeared to be in good shape with no apparent wear. What could cause this whine? Thanks for your help, Larry

A complete disassembly and inspection of each part would be necessaery to find the problem. Possible cluster gear bushings.

Larry....I remember I had a 1940 Buick coupe (loved that car) back around 1958/59 Man....low gear sounded like I had a siren on the car. That car with that big straight 8 engine could wind up 1/2 mile in low gear. Every stick shift Buick I ever heard had that whine,You could hear them a mile away. It was just the pitch of the gears...I would not worry about it, you can't fix what you cant see....Enjoy the whine.......Have some cheese with the Whine. ...GOOD LUCK...ED
I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED

He mentioned that the whine was in all forward gears......could even be a very worn-out front pinion bearing.

Thanks for your replies. I checked both the 48 shop manual and master parts catalog and 1-neither describes nor shows a pinion bearing. There is a needle bearing between the front end of the main shaft and rear end of the clutch shaft which could be the pinion bearing, 2-neither describes nor shows a cluster but the counter shaft gear assembly consists of 3 gears which could be the cluster gear. Bushings are pressed in to each end of this gear and they could be worn and causing the whine. The manual says these bushings are part of the gear assembly and are not available separately. Does this all make sense? Thanks, Larry

Larry, a. Check the transmission for sufficient oil. Chevgene recommends 85W-140. Same for differential. b. Are you sure the whine is coming from the transmission? If confident that it is, then, it could be the input shaft bearings. They may be whining under load. Or it could be the rear bearing on the through shaft to the universal joint. c. Because the whine is in all gears, I suspect that it is the imput shaft and not the cluster gears. Good luck with diagnosing the problem, Charlie
