I have about 3,000 miles on my rebuilt 235. It developed a "Rattle" inside the motor last spring, but, because the rear end went out, I didn't address the problem.
It doesn't sound like a rod, or main bearing, it hasn't gotten any worse, and it goes away when you rev the motor up a bit. It almost sounds like really poor fuel and it is pinging, but, I retarded the timing until it stalled, and it never went away.
Any guesses?

This is just a guess but it could be a hot spot in a cylinder that is causing the fuel/air mix to ignite too soon causing what sounds like the pinging when your timing is advanced too far. It's not likely on a new rebuild but it is possible. I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable folks here will have more likely ideas. Good luck.

I was wearing the stethescope, and prodding around, when I noticed the Harmonic Balancer was walking all over the place and was slapping around. The key was sheared right off. I was able to retrieve both halves and the crank wasn't badly bruised, so I cleaned it up with emery cloth, and put in a new key. Good as new. The good Lord let me off easy this time.

Wow! You dodged one that time. Good catch.

Be sure the harmonic balancer is a good tight fit or you could end up with the same problem again. I have seen some that drilled the crank end and fitted a bolt with large washer to help hold the balancer in place. Tony

The 235 I have in my 37 has a rattle but it goes away when #2 plug wire is pulled off so I dont think I will be as lucky as you but will check the balancer.
