The 1952-1954 vac. advance is towards the rear of the distributor due to the side motor mount bracker used on those models of passenger cars. No reason why it would not work on a 1951 in that location other than looking out of place.

But it can be pointed any direction you want as long as you put the cables in the cap in the correct positions. Point the rotor at #1, rotate the distributor to where you want the vacuum advance, and then put the #1 wire in the hole in the cap corresponding to the rotor and line the others up by firing order.

In so doing the above the grease cup may be difficult to service.

I just installed a 54-235 into my 51 and the vacum adv. is pointing somewhat at the right front wheel just like it did with the 216. The grease cup is located right behind it where it is easy to service. I just used the original lines from the 51, both the gas & vacum. Works great. I also used a 53 valve cover on the 54 engine, seems to look more natural.
