Hi, I have a fairly original '56 BelAir HT that I picked up a couple of months ago and am trying to get ready for Flint. It is a 2bl 265 PG. I have most things done and am doing some maintenence on the engine. Dropped the pan to clean it up and check bearings. Lots of gunk in the pan but bearings look good. In doing this, I removed the exhaust manifolds to clean them up and get the heat riser working. They looked like they had never been off. Locks in place etc. My question is --- Are there gaskets between the exhaust manifolds and the heads? There were none and it looked like they were sealed. Also, are there supposed to be washers on all the exhaust manifold bolts? I found three on one side and four on the other. They were under the locks. Not sure if they were supposed to be that way or in was a "Friday Build"
Also, are there gaskets between the driver manifold and the head pipe. There were the remains of metal/asbestos gaskets between the pass. manifold and the heat riser and possibly the heat riser to head pipe but cannot tell on the driver side. Suspect that the exhaust pipes were replaced sometime in the 56 years and 75000 miles. Thanks for the help and "See you in Flint.

Thanks for the help and "See you in Flint. no gasket between manifold and head. thick flat washers on all but the middle pair of bolts on each side. the thick flat washers are sandwiched between the manifold and the french locks. mike

There were no gaskets between the head and manifolds. Chevrolet did sell gaskets for this application but you are better off not having them The is a flat gasket on either side of the heat riser. A special thick solid washer is against the manifold. Locking washers are never used for exhaust systems as the intense heat will flaten them out. The left eshaut pipe to manifold uses a thick packing.

Thanks ChevyGene. Will start collecting the parts. See that the 2" exhaust has two bolt flanges. By 57 they were three bolt and there seem to be fewer parts available.

The left eshaut pipe to manifold uses a thick packing. I have a different application but similar questions. I just replaced the gaskets in the 327 in my brother's Checker. There were three flat washers on one side and four on the other. Do the flat washers just go two on each end and none in the middle? Do they need to be there? Will the dealer still carry these?

no thick washers on the middle pair of bolts, just the four bolts on each end of the manifold. the washers are readily avialable--COrvette Central and Paragon Reproductions--both have websites.mike
