Today after work I opened the gearbox for the first time and had a peek inside, thick chocolate brown sticky oil covering everything is what I found up to the correct level on the filler thread. Now can someone tell me what you think of the condition of the gear edges, I am no mechanic but they look nice and square with plenty of meat on them and please bare in mind that this car has only travelled 10,400 mile. Here is a picture after I cleaned, brushed and flushed out the box with turps and few times. ![[Linked Image from i710.photobucket.com]](http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww107/grant81/DSC04361.jpg) My good friend Ray (1928isgreat) and I spoke today and I have now refilled the box with a Penrite 85w-140 gear oil which is suited for yellow metals, ray has ran this for many years and swears by the stuff and actually I'm a Penrite oil fella myself.. ![[Linked Image from i710.photobucket.com]](http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww107/grant81/DSC04363.jpg) Now for one stupid question, when I pulled off the top of the box and lever in all my excitement, I have now moved the gears back and forth when cleaning it all out, is there a correct location for the gears to be in for the top to go back on correct, I have tried a few time and each time I cannot select 4th gear with the stick when the bolts are redone up, I told you it was a stupid question and unfortunately there will be plenty more of these following in years to come. I don't know why but I always put the gears in the neutral position. Then make sure both forks drop in place when setting the lid back on.

Ditto Grant,
Fit the top set at neutral, ensuring the forks drop into the slots on the gears.
Your gears look very good, not much sign of wear at all.
Another job done, and you only have 3 gears not 4.

I use neutral also on tractors if the gear shift goes out of the slot when they are worn. Gears look great! they should be slightly tapered on the edges so they mesh easier and when clashed to death they get more edgy. With different oil, you might get more noise and may clash easier when shifting. The way I see it is the 600wt kept those gears in good shape for those 10 k miles, why change now. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks fellas for the heads up on this thread and all advice gladly taken on board.
4 gears hey, WTF was I thinking with that comment, anyways I went back out early this morning after my big bowl full of steamy hot milky porridge smothered with honey and got it all sorted and surprise surprise i found 3rd gear and not the elusive 4th.. Now I can change the gears a lot easier when the box is cold as before (the last 83yrs) it was quite hard to do with the thicker grease, I will get some thicker (600) and add to it over time when I get it back on the road but for now it will do just fine while I am pushing it around the garage.

You do have 4 gears, 3 forward & 1 reverse.

Hey Grant, it looks like you're having good luck with the trans. While you've got Monty all pulled down like that, any chance I can get you to shoot a picture of the front engine mount just like the one of the rear you've included in your post? I'd appreciate it.

Mate I went out and had a look for and at the front engine mounts, I cannot get a good photo as I have not removed the pan from around the engine yet, very hard to see anything in there really, sorry about that?? or am I looking in the wrong spot?

If you go to my blog and the posting 1985 the fifth improvement - engine mounts, it has a picture of a standard front mount. Disregard the rubber sandwich mount.

Thanks Ray, I appreciate the reference. I wish the pics were from a bit further back, though. It’s a bit hard to tell what I’m looking at.
Is it a single center mount that goes to the front crossmember? To where on the engine does it attach?

Hi Dave,
On each side of the front mains is a hole, one is tapped into the block, the other is a nut and bolt.
Let me know if you want a picture of the mount in a different angle and I will add it to the blog, as I sure as hell have not yet learned to add it to this site properly yet.

Last night I removed the centre cover off the rear diff and out came more brown sticky oil just like the gearbox, its now just very slowly dripping out ready for a good clean up.
