To SSG26K, Chipper, 35Mike, AntiqueMechanic, TerryHicks, 1928isgreat, Raycycled, Jfranklin, danr and woodbutcher and a bunch of other folks:
You guys have been listening to my questions with such patience and understanding through several threads. I've been 26ing about this and 26ing about that and more questions than a two-year old. As of last night with the help of John (woodbutcher), we have pretty much determined that I don't even have a 1926 1-ton, but actually is a 1928 1-ton. I confess that I mis-lead everyone but honestly, my title says it is a 1926 and I truly believed that was what I had.
Anyway, thank you all for listening, for commenting and most of all for genuinely trying to help. My square peg is finally jammed into the round hole and it fits perfectly! The good news as I told woodbutcher is that now I can go back to the VCCA site and read everything there is posted about the '28 and enjoy it all over again. To say I am embarrassed would be an understatement but out here on the playground there are no rules. If you guys and gals don't hold it against me, then I'm good. Now, let me start asking all kinds of questions about the '28 1-ton.
Thank you everyone, you're da best, Jerry

It is relatively common for old cars and trucks to have the wrong year on the title or other paperwork. It is not a problem when the owner recognizes that the paperwork may be wrong. The problem is when the owner has been told many, many times that his vehicle is not the year he thinks and still insists that it is. Just ask Steve at the Filling Station about the problem when he is accused of sending the wrong parts or selling parts that don't fit or other wrongs. He has some really good stories.

Hey thanks chipper, that does help. Life is short and we need to keep on moving. And in hindsight, all those parts I tried that just didn't quite fit. Duh again! Now I am beginning to see the humor in it. What the heck, 28's are da bomb and I am a lucky guy to have one.
I am still wanting to tackle a new bed and through some great people from this site and their friends, I think I may have found some white oak less that 2 hours away. What a network vcca has going, totally unbelievable and a benefit to anyone that wants to be a part of it. We all should be thankful.
tks, Jerry

I'm glad to hear that you are going the right direction. I have learned soo much from people in this club. It helped when I learned to just listen to what others have to say.
The great thing about the chat site is that the conversation is written down. That make s it much easier for those of us that have a short memory. Just don't tell my wife that I admit to it.
Take Care, and the best of luck with your '28.
Chris

Thank you Chris. I should have also stated that VCCA is a wonderful place to be but in reality there would NOT be a VCCA if there were not a host of good folks like you and everyone else that participates (including those in the background that never speak). That brings me to another thought. When was the last time we thanked all of the monitors that spend countless hours answering the same questions over and over and listening, commenting, directing and controlling this site . I personally wish to thank them for being the kind and generous people they are. What a fantastic job y'all do, so please take a bow.
tks, Jerry

Well said heavyhands. It's good to remember it's always the PEOPLE that "make" any organization --- business, club, church, neighborhood, whatever..... Bill.

Hey I just enlarged your photo and you're right it is a "28" one tonner. Brakes on the front, (better chance of stopping now), and a "27" style radiator surround. The 1/2 tonner carried a "28" radiator surround. Beyond that the frame, differential etc are different. By the way , no criticism but your headlights are sitting up too high. The cone under the bucket goes up underneath the cross bar, not on top of it, otherwise it tends to vibrate. Glad that it has front brakes even if it won't be as exciting.

Good eye Terry, the headlights were installed when it came home. I had honestly not noticed it was wrong. Keep looking and let me know if you see anything else. Jerry

Good Call Terry,
In my case it was over 30 years before I realized my headlights were mounted too high, and it was not until all the Chevs were parked in a line at the 2009 Chev 4 Tour at Castlemaine Victoria, at which time it stood out like you know what.
Cheers
Ray
Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great" I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

Hi all,
Now that we know it's a '28 1 ton with front brakes, I can add that it's a model LP. The LO, which was sold during the first half of the '28 model year, did not have front brakes. The '27 style radiator shell is correct for the '28 1 ton.
Another interesting point is that Chevy did not make a 1 ton for 1929. Instead, they offered a 1 1/5 ton truck: model LQ.
BTW, one of the available ring and pinion gear rations for the model LQ was 4.88 to 1. The reason I mention this is that if you can find one of these rear ends, the pumpkin will bolt right into a '27 or '28 1 ton with no machining required. The 4.88:1 might be better for cruising than the original 6.35:1 that's in the '27 and '28 1 ton trucks.
Heavyhands, glad you're having so much fun! I know just what you mean about the old trucks being a people magnet. I never tire of it. ;-)
Cheers, Dean

The standard 4 cyl 1 ton truck rearend ratio from 1926-28 was 5.42:1,38 ring gear teeth & 7 pinion teeth. The 6.35:1 ratio was an agricultural ratio that the master parts says must not be used with the LO optional 4spd transmission or the std LP 4spd transmission. With the rear end ratio of 4.88:1(39 ring gear teeth & 9 pinion teeth)for the '29 LQ 1 1'2 ton trucks, you can only use the ring & pinion gears,as the torque tube assembly for an LQ 1 1/2 ton truck is approximately 2- 2 1/2" longer,as the wheelbase for the LQ is longer.

Heavyhands(Jerry) e-mailed me some nice pictures of his truck. It does not have front brakes. It also does not seem to have a 4 speed tranny (no reverse lock out). Going by one of his earlier post on a different thread, the engine serial number indicates an eraly 28 engine. He has a 1928 LO 1 ton. Thanks Woodbutcher

I'm just shaking my head in disbelief. How the heck do so many people know so darn much about so many things. I feel like I was just found in the turnip patch and am clueless. You folks not only amaze me and put me to shame. Every one of you out there knows more about my truck than I do and she is sitting in MY garage. Wow! A year ago I thought I was buying a '26, 1/2 ton pickup. Today, without doing a thing, I now own a '28 1 ton LO without front brakes and possibly an unusual rearend...and oh yes, headlight buckets that are sitting too high! Does that about cover it? Oops, one other thing, I think I have car wheels on the front and truck on the back. No wonder nobody around here has ever seen one like this, she's a freak of nature. But you know what? She is absolutely gorgeous to me. Damn, I love the looks of that sexy body and the way her hood wraps around the beast. She has "running lights" to melt the heart of even the toughest guy. And her buckets are to die for. I love to run my hands over her volumptous fenders and sometimes even catch myself glancing sideways at how tight her doors are! She lets me know when she is happy. When I turn her on and she purrs like a kitten, she is happy. She has class, she is refined, she responds at a turn of a key...and to her there is no one else to turn her on but me. She's mine and she is indeed beautiful. Now, if y'all will excuse me, I have to run and take a cold shower.
Smiling Jerry
