If someone had put 80/90 gear oil in my tranny at some point it would leak right? I think this has been done. I have been told it may have damaged the seals. Should I drain it and fill it with the proper stuff or should I replace seals?

Thanks Kevin

Trnas??? wink

Anyway, there are no seals in a 1930 transmission. You might want to drain the transmission and then put in 600W oil, which is called for in the owner's manual, and then see if the leak either slows down or stops.

I am replacing the gear oil in the trans and differential. Any advice on how much I should order?

Thanks. Al

Just found the answer in the Chevrolet Repair Manual. Trans 1 qt, Rear Axle 2 qts.

Have you decided what you are going to use? I have found a mobil 600w cylander oil, and a lubriplate pruduct something 288. There seems to be alot of controversy on what to use

back in the 1950s when I worked in a Sinclair filling station we used 90 wt. multipurpose gear grease.

This is what I use in my cars from 1928 thru 1954:
Traveller® Multi-Purpose Gear Oil 85W-140, 2 gal is $29.99 from Tractor Supply Company.
A friend of mine also adds about 1/4 by volume STP or any honey oil, to quiet down the whine of the old gears. I just let mine whine and keep the levels at the full line. I use about a 50-50 mix of chassis grease and 85-140 for the manual steering gear boxes.
