I bought an aftermarket rebuilt water pump for my '36 and the impeller appears to be too wide by about 0.115 inches. Does anyone have a spare OEM pump that they could measure for me so that I can determine what a correct impeller thickness is?

The old pump when measured horizontally from the face of the body to the face of the impeller is 1.085 inches. The rebuilt pump measures 1.200 inches. The cavity in the block measures about 1.140 inches, so the rebuilt pump impeller strikes the block. Help!

I have 2 NORS pumps here. They are the same brand. They measure about 1.125 from the machined mounting face of the pump to the rear tip of the impeller. A NORS impeller from a rebuild kit measures about .850 thick at the outermost point.
I notice the assembled pumps have the shaft protruding past the impeller a little, while the kit impeller/shaft has the shaft less than flush with the back side of the impeller. Does your pump seem to have excess space between impeller and pump body? If so, maybe it could be pressed on a bit farther.

My understanding was the 1936 had a pump that looked the same as the 1935 (plug for the heater nipple) but was thicker. If you look at the pumps the '35 has one half side of impeller veins are thinner than the other. On the '36 pump they are the same.

Thanks for your help guys. 35Mike - I think the problem is that the impeller vanes on the rebuilt pump are about 1 inch wide verses the old pump - 7/8 inches. Someone goofed when they cast these impellers. Mike. Do you have a '36 NORS pump that you would sell to me? Or, if you know of a pump rebuilder that would have the correct impeller/shaft assembly for a '36, please advise. Thanks, Gene

Are you 100% sure you have a '36 block? Does it have water jacket the entire length of the cylinder?

Yes Chip I am absolutely sure it is a 36 block. It actually came out of a '36 standard but I believe the standard and master were the same for '36. I can give you the casting no. on the block in a lttle while but I am about 1200 feet away from the Chevy at this moment.

The casting number of 836010 is for a 1936 engine block.
