Just found a coil complete with the thick wire (cable) going from near the top of the coil to the ignition lock. It is out of either a 37 or 38. I want to use the coil and cable on my 1940 but can't figure out how to remove the cable from the ignition. There appears to be a 1/2 inch hex on the end of the cable but it doesn't want to turn. How do you disconnect the cable from back of the the lock without breaking something? Thanks.

Doesn't your '40 already have the cable and cap on it? I think you're not supposed to be able to disconnect it without breaking something....

You probably need to have that ignition switch keyed to your key or use different keys for ignition and door. The grommet in the firewall is large and split so you can remove/insert the switch through the hole.

You don't remove the cable from the ignition key housing. At least no way I've discovered. I don't know why they put the hex ends on the cable because it does confuse one trying to get things apart and having never done it. Why are you wanting to remove the cable from the housing? As Richard said you can use the whole assembly if it fastens to your dash correctly. If you need to replace the wire inside the cable I can help you with that. Post your email address and I'll send you some information.

HEY Tiny! That sounds like a trick worth knowing! Can you post it here, too?

Replacing the wire? Rather than post a reply to a thread that will eventually get relegated to page ten thousand in the forum as threads stack on top of it I'd rather send it to those needing it. There are probably more ways to do it but if you want to know the way I did it I'll be happy to share. Just give me your email address. Some time back I composed an email to another needing the help and saved a draft of it. I just send a copy of that draft out when necessary.
