I am trying to remove the rear brake drum from a 54 chevy rear axle. Drum seems to be stuck on raer axle pilot. Loosened brakes via star wheel, put on penetrating oil and hit center of rear axle several times with a 3# sledge. I doesn'e budge. There is no sound of brake contact. The procedure worked well on the right side. Any ideas? Thanks

Try getting a pry par between the backing plate and while prying on the drum, then on the other side of the drum smack with a hammer. You may need to rotate the drum and keep trying in different spots around the drum. Then as a last resort heat around the center of the drum.

Does the vehicle run? If so, remove rear wheels, support vehicle with jack stands under rear axle housing.

Reinstall 2 or 3 lug nuts, do NOT tighten against brake drum.

Run car in 1st gear, depress clutch, then hit brake, causing abrupt stop with rear drum. Reverse the rotation of brake drum, do same procedure in reverse. Brake drum should now be free from center of axle, allowing drum removal.

Be certain to use lug nuts.

Since you are no longer new to Chevy Chatter II you might want to post in the 1949-54 forum instead.

Good luck with your rear brake drum removal.

Hay: Thats a new one to me. I struggled with many drums all through the 50s untill now. Can't wait to try this out.
Had one (dodge)back in the mid 50s that never did come off. Beat that puller with a 9 lb. sledge with the drum red hot.

How long has it been since the brakes were worked on, is this a barn find car that has been stored for years? Have you tried to unbolt the wheel cylinder from the backing plate?

If you are absolutely sure the brake shoes aren't holding the drum on, I would check the emergency brake cable . Next is soak the lug bolt holes with PB Blaster and tap not hard but steady with a small ball pien hammer first between two lug bolts and then on the other side, untill there isn't a solid thud, after a while they should vibrate any rust loose, the drum should work loose, probably rust around the lug bolts, unless the brake drum is stuck to the brake band. Is there any slack around the drum at all?

Smack the brake drum with ball end of ball peen hammer between the wheel studs. May take a couple of whacks between studs on opposite sides but it will come loose. Never had it fail as long as the hammer is large enough.

If your hammer is like mine lightning rarely strikes the same place twice, protect the stud threads or the hammer WILL damage the threads.

BOBG1951chevy: Thanks to you and others I got the drum off this morning. Tried your 1st / rev technique a few times with pounding on it in between and finally it came free. Of note, the right side which was not a problem came off the rabbet the first time I tried your method. Appreciate the help / ideas from all.
