My 48 Chevy has tube-type shocks, but no mention of this style in shop manual. Were tube-type shocks an option on 48 Chevy?

The 1949 was the first year for tube type rear shocks. You have some kind of an after-market change over.

Thanks, Gene. The brackets that hold the top of the tube-type shocks are well-made, factory-fabricated using 1/4" plate. They bolt to car frame through same two holes used to mount lever shock bodies. These brackets have stamped part numbers B-1142-R and B-1142-L. Judging from appearance of the shocks and brackets, and difficulty removing the brackets, it is my guess that they were installed decades ago.

There is nothing wrong with the tube shocks if you don't mind they are not original. Years ago it was cheaper to retrofit the tube shocks than to buy lever shocks.
I'm sure they have been there since at least 1950.

That is very interesting, to me anyway. I assume that you have removed those brackets already per your post?? If you decide to get rid of them, let me know. I have rebuild lever shocks on my 48, but would enjoy having those brackets also.

Thanks.

Hi Jim. If decide to get rid of the rear shock brackets, will try to remember to let you know.

If you can, please post a photo of your 48 Fleetmaster Coupe.

Hello Guy,

Thanks for the reply. My 48 is a 2 dr Town Sedan. It's in my garage right now as am working on brakes. About to drive me nuts, but will get by that some how. Been threatening to post a picture of it and will get that done after brake work done.

Thanks again and the best to ya.

Jim.
