Is there a little spring or just a washer and cotter pin where the shift rod hooks to the transmission .....wish I had taken pics

There is a small spring as well. set up would be spring first, then larger washer then the cotter pin. Spring acts as an anti rattle and also takes up some free play as the holes wear larger. talk
