The closest to correct color I have seen is what is sold by The Filling Station and is an off olive drab type color. The exhaust packing was asbestos string. All I can say is it can still be found in antique stores here and there and is a graphited valve packing rope. I have also heard of a ceramic rope you can get in boiler shops. You can unwind the rope to get the size string you need.
