I put oil in the ground bolt opening when I did the oakie bushing just like the link suggested. After I roadtested everything I read the link again and saw I added WAY more than was needed to lube the universal,so I removed the top fill plug on the transmission and 5 or 6 ozs came out. I know better than to overfill the tranny but I could'nt see exactly how much was being squeezed into the hole. No harm done, but just a warning to others. I usually learn the hard way. grin

just refilled my 37 chev tranny the same way, BUT i left the fill plug out & kept sqirting oil in till i saw it starting to come out of the fill plug hole. no danger of overfilling. it took exactly the whole container (1qt) to fill a dry xmissilon

Isn't the point of initial oiling the u-joint ball to get just enough in so that it is picked up by the edge of the cups to sling it about. Maybe just cup deep?

It would seem that gravity will cause a small, but sufficient, amount to trace back to the bushing(s)/Oakie.

This may be one of those situations where "more is less."
Thanks,

It would be interesting to learn what the design looked like that makes the rear bearing leak to lube the dry universal joint and then keep it lubed. My rear transmission bearing has quite a bit of end play. I'm wondering if this is designed this way or is it just worn. After almost two years of owning this old car it now FINALLY has no leaks of any type. The PVC installation was the best thing I've done so far. The underneath is MUCH cleaner and no drips on the garage floor.

May want to make sure the car is close to level when you add/fill/check the level of a transmission. If the nose of the car is jacked up a couple feet it changes the level of the plug on the transmission. Just a thought. Don

What kind of PVC installation are you talking about? Pictures?

Thanks

I believe it's a typo. He installed a PCV system on his car.

Now it makes sense. :-) By the way, I found this great link for anyone else that is curious about this procedure:

PCV installation.

I will be giving this a try this summer.

Thanks!
Dave R

Edit - I can't believe I posted the link as PVC installation

I can't get over how great your engine looks with allof your detail work.

I was wondering however, what that little yellow Fuel Filter, is doing, just prior to your larger fuel filter/pump?

I would have expected you to go the OEM Glass & Brass in line, A/C fuel filter. But your car sure does look great!!

Did I read your going to drive her to Michigan for the Anniversary Meet ?

Enjoy the ride,
Michael41

The yellow see thru gas filter is one of three. There's one built into the fuel pump and another just before ther carb. The old Rochester car got trash into it so after going to a new rebuilt carter I decided to OVERKILL with the filters.

About Michigan...no I won't be there. I don't think my old car would make it. I don't know what would break but I wouldn't want to find out. I guess I could trailer it,but that's just not for me. I'd love to see the event for sure. I'll wait for photos. Thanks for the nice comments.

As a general rule plastic fuel filters, or any other plastic items, are not recommended for an engine compartment. If a fire starts under the hood the plastic filter entering the carburetor will be the first to melt and then the fuel pump supplies fuel to the break until the engine shuts down from the fire.

Take a look at your plastic fuel filters with the engine running and you can sometimes see the sides pulsate, this constant movement will weaken the filter.

Sorry that your nice coupe will not be at the meet in Mich. It would be enjoyable for a lot of people to see.

I have a small, NEW Fuel filter on my 41 as well. I installed it in "hidden" spot so there's no way to see it. It's only been on about 1.5 years. I've changed the filter two times and it was pretty clean. I guess someone did a good job restoring my gas tank. And when I installed a new fuel line {tank to pump} about 3 years ago, we took the time to flush the tank. But the new filter gives me a little piece of mind.

I'm getting ready to install an old/OEM A/C or Durex on my car, on the fuel line, just before the carb. Mostly as a visual, but they do work and look cool. And yes, the top of it is polished. Not a high-shine, just a nice clean up polish.

Enjoy the ride,
Michael41

Would it be possible to get a moderator to make this a thread of it's own and put a sticky on it? It seems like one of those things people would like to see and have available when they want to do it on their own car.

I think this forum is about orginal restored chevys, I'm the exception to the rule. I post things that are really not true to the subject, such as chrome, pcv installs,12V horns, etc. So far I've not been banned, I think they treat me like a brother-in-law instead of a brother but we play well together....GRIN

Yes, obviously sidetracked as noted by pk and Richard. However, a very interesting / informative sidetrack job.

Richard's suggestion of making two threads out of this seems like a GREAT idea! I presume that would make it easy to find "overfill tranny" OR "filter." Just my 2 cents....

And, we definitely want Steve to continue posting about the neat stuff he does to his coupe!!!

Good point about the plastic fuel filters melting in the event of a fire but the non metal fuel lines should be about the same risk !

Over filled tranny, PVC, fuel filters, chrome stuff, orig Chevy's non-orig. Chevys..etc. etc. I'm confused.

I'll leave this to those understand, respond and moderate/makeup the rules.

I'm out-a-here.
By-ya-all.
