Does anyone know the factory differences between dashes on Special Deluxe, Master Deluxe, and Master 85 for 1940? Some Special Deluxes seem to have more "trim" on the dashes than others (the stainless trim pieces above/below the speedometer, above/below the clock, areound th gauge cluster, beneathe the chock and throttle knobs, etc. Similarily, some Master Deluxes have this trim, while others don't. Was is done differently at different assembly plants, was it a mid-year addition to both Special and Master Deluxes, can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

1940 Chevy dashes were changed from early production to later productiion in the 1940 model year. With the early dashes, the choke and throttle knobs had a parallel stainless trim veticle mouldings on each side of both the trottle and choke knob. Chevrolet then removed these 4 narrow ( about 1/4" wide ) stainless steel mouldings from the dash and replaced it with 1 wide ( maybe 1 1/4" wide ) stainless steel mouldings under both the throttle and the choke.
Early production dashes also had NO stainless trim around the glass in the speedometer housing or around the glove box clock.
Special Deluxe and Master Deluxe dashes were wood grained. Master 85 dashed were painted brown.

Thanks,

Makes perfect sense as you describe it. There doesn't seem to be any coorelation between Special Deluxe vs Master Deluxe regarding this trim (without knowing their production dates). Some of each have it......while others don't.

Mine was built in St Louis, MO in November '39. It has 1 1/4" wide strips under the throttle and choke and another the size of the knobs under each. My instrument cluster has the strip around the glass and a ribbed vertical strip top and bottom about an inch and a half wide.
