Got a 1927 that the oil pressure will be zero when I start it cold then all of a sudden it will jump up. Once it jumps up it stays but it may be 10-15 secs. Normally it pegs the gauge cold and 3-5 warm. It overheated the number 2 rod bearing. Rod and Main bearings have been redone but I want to be sure the oil system is right. Took oil pump apart and it looks good. What about the Billy Possum replacement gear pump I read about??

I would check the oil lines in the engine for cracks and the inside of the pump for weak springs on the vanes and scoring. The delay may be due to oil too thick or pump losing some prime...again weak springs and or scoring. Should run about 8-10 warm at speed, 5 or so at idle. Burned rod can be caused by being adjusted too tight or no oil getting to that trough because of a plugged oil line or a crack in that line.

I would not worry about replacing the pump just yet. Check the level of your oil by the dipstick. If it indicates full, add another quart of oil to the crankcase. If it is very low you may have to add additional oil. If this correction does not solve your problem you can consider changing the oil pump. I am not a fan of changing to the gear oil pump unless you modify the system and install a 1937 or later gear pump. The 28 engine is designed to receive max volume of oil to insure the troughs are kept full. A vane pump fits this requirement. Hi volume, low pressure. A gear pump provides high pressure and flow. But, we don't really need pressure. No bearings in the 28 or pressure fed, they are all supplied oil by splash and drip from the many reservoirs designed for that purpose.

I have covered some 20000 miles in my "28". On start-up there is zero pressure till it finally wanders up the line to the gauge at which point it hits 10. From then on it wanders back down to about 5 as things warm up and thin out. This is somewhat different to my Triumph TR3a which hits 70 on start-up and then wanders back to 55.

Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great" I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/
