Gidday All,

Just wondering if any of the OZ fellas had any spare front/rear bumper bars that you would want to sell that would suit my old rustic 28...
If not I suspose it is something that has to be made up for new?? or could you point me in the right direction if there is someone in OZ that makes them up....

Great website this, I just love trolling through all the older pages from years back reading up on 1928 articles...

Keep smiling and enjoy

Cheers Grant.

Hi Grant,

If you dont have any luck locally, speak to me before you do anything crazy like importing some from the states. The Fedex charge is horrendous. Ask me how I know. And I didnt even use the buggers, there up in the shed, waiting for me to restore them one day to try and get some money back.

Cheers

Ray

thats unfortunate, it took me years to find front bumpers, most I spoke to advised to get some made as even if you find originals they are usually so badly pitted they are not worth the work. Mine weren't too bad but still took a lot of effort to bring back to bare metal. Bendigo and Ballarat swap meets are possibilities. I have a 27 chev ute with a 28 motor if you look on this site under trucks headed aussie truck back in March, WinoWwally posted a picture of it in the Yarra Valley winery where I had parked it. I have only done 400 miles in it so far and am still learning.

Very rare to find them in OZ. I imported 2 sets of front and rear 4 years ago from the states. Cost me an arm and leg, but feel good as they are original. Bloody Fedex costed more than the item.

Cheers

I am just curious, if any of you folks downunder have seen these tubular bumpers?

Here is a picture of my 28 sedan's front bumper bar, and the bumperettes in the rear are matching, down to the end caps on the tubes. I haven't seen any others like them. Since bumpers were an aftermarket or a dealer installed accessory. I have been told that some exported vehicles may have been equipped with the tubular bumpers. they are good and heavy duty, I like them, besides I can always pick my car out of a lineup, by the smile (bumper on it's face!

Monty, the front bumpers are still on ebay for $50 in vintage car parts with about 4 days to go, look in the chevrolet parts section for quicker access! Mr Mack can't say I have seen the tube bumpers in AUS, they are usually flat spring steel usually two with variations in style.

28 Chevs did not have bumper bars as standard, in US there was a factory accessory set, but down here in Aus. no such luxury. There are literally heaps of different styles made in Aus. You had to buy them from an accessory house. I have a brochure from Aus. firm Storey Bros. who made about 20 varieties of bumper bars.

Grant. I have an unpainted raw steel set of flat vertical sheppard hook bars that would suit your 28. They were reproduced from originals many moons ago. I have the two front bars, for back bumperette bars and a one set of brackets for patterns. Give me a call to discuss.

Mr Mack. I've seen quite a few of those round bars in photos of original US Chevs, but we did not have them down here.

Gidday Fellas,

Sounds like there were many choices years ago for the bumpers and really its doesn't matter what style of bar you put on the car as it gives each old chev it's own stand alone look & personality....

Chris I will call you through the week and have a chat when I get a chance to make a cuppa and put the feet up.

Cheers Grant.
