Hello: In one of my earlier posts I mentioned that the needle on my '37 speedometer would come to rest well below the zero mark. As recommended, I pulled the needle off and lined it up with the zero mark and tried to push it back in. Well, it doesn't seem to want to stay at zero and it's really loose. It keeps dropping back down. I took it apart (see pictures), and I can't see what the needle is supposed to plug into. It's almost as if a piece is missing. Does anyone have any experience with how to fix this? Thanks in advance. :-) Dave speedo3 by chev37, on Flickr speedo2 by chev37, on Flickr Speedo1 by chev37, on Flickr

Well, I guess I answered my own question. Found a company called D&M Restoration on the internet. I gave them a call and spoke to a tech. Apparently the shaft (as seen in the middle of picture 2) has snapped off from the speed cup (the little bronze hole above the odometer in picture 1). The needle is actually held in place magnetically! There is no way to just buy a part to fix this. It must be sent in, repaired, and the shaft re-magnetized. Live and learn.

If you attempt to repair a component on your car that you are not completely knowledgeable of, this could be the result. Not to discourage you from attempting repairs, but just a "heads up".

Thanks Ray. You are right, but I'm just one of those guys that has to take something apart to see how it works. I can't help myself. You would think I'd learn by now. It's just so much fun...but EXPENSIVE!!!

It seems the shaft is also broke where it attaches to the needle. I've seen these appearing quite often on ebay, supose is cheaper than fixing this one.
