As PT Barnum said "There's a sucker born every minute"
As long as these folks, with the inflated egos, are out there to pay this price just to smirk at there (so called friends) and say "look what I got..that you ain't got" this will keep happening.......Get real and it will go away.....ED

And a dollar to a donut says that this compass is a reproduction. It does not even have "GM" on the chrome pointer. They have been making these compasses for several years now. It would be a great item for $500 or so. It obviously has cost someone alot of money to tool up and make these. But at this price........ It's not for me.

One of these days, someone is going to pay the price and find out later there is a problem with the item. Hello lawyer and law suite.

I haven't seen that particular seller on ebay sell anthing but genuine original parts(although this does not have the GM). That particular compass looks to be a generic US Gauge compass which was sold though Auto specialty stores at the same time GM was selling them to GM customers.

The Repos i have seen are sold by Dick Moffat on ebay , and you can tell that they are brand new just by look at them .

Fun stuff....The comments crack me up!!

First, I can vouch for this guy as well, and the compass is not a GM, re-pop. Out West re-pops sell for $400.-700. or slightly higher.

GM Compass's {OEM} have been selling at or near this prices for a couple of years. As we all know, prices are a bit higher out west. And if memory serves me, I believe a GM Compass sold on ebay for $2,800.+- about a year ago.

One of the biggest collectors of Old Chevy Parts told me, “It’s not just the compass {item}, it’s the compass having all the correct brackets/parts, not being damaged, in working order and in excellent condition. If it has the orig. box, the price goes up.”

I’ve seen old, marginal looking GM compasses, w/out the brackets or parts sell for $300.-400.+ Seems to me the market place and part's condition drive the price's, not the people.

I can assure those who wonder, the buyer or the seller did not fall out of any trees, eat to many oranges, their ego’s are in check, they are real, not suckers, have legal funds and enjoy the classic car hobby, have high paying professions and are successful in life. And they enjoy buying/investing in classic cars and parts. So it just comes down to a good guy buying and or selling what they like and want.

After all, you can't fault a guy for wanting to know which direction is WEST cool bigl bigl bigl

Enjoy,
Michael41

How would you tell if the compass is gm or generic without the mounting bands, as as far as I know there are no part nos.on the compass, and also some other accessories ie. the outside thermometer which was made by joma and has either the joma logo or the gm logo, or the fender marker made by casco with and without the gm logo, just put a gm mounting band on it and its a 1940 gm compass and I don't think anybody would be able to tell the difference. As for price, chevrolet accessories have always sold for somewhat big prices even years ago, especially 41s, just depends on how bad someone wants something.

i been watching all this. and i seem to remember two adages, that had a direct effect on my life. one was "go west young man", and the other was "buy low and sell high" !!!!!!! those two adages, are part of what made a america great.
there is one more i can think of that applies here. sometimes the difference between a man and a boy, is the price of the toy.
if i have any fault for the guy selling this compass, it is that he isn't being accurate in the advetisement. the 41-42 compass, was never marbled, but the same color as the gearshift knob. as to the price. well, we do live in a free society, which might allow one guy to collect a 25 chevy, and another a 41. it is what makes our world go round.
so in my opinion of which i have many, and feel free to speak them, enough crying about another man giving you the opputunity to purchase a part or accessory, or don't pay attention to it, and pass right on. it is what makes this great country move on. FREEDOM. happy easter one and all.

There is / was a seller on ebay selling GM bands for the compasses which were engraved with the GM logo afterwards.
You had to trade in your plain jane generic band , and then it would be engraved to sell to the next puchaser.

There's a difference between free trade capitalism and fraud. Many of these sellers take advantage of one to perpetrate the other.

I just checked his picture of the compass sitting on the 1939 "Modern to the Minute"accessory catalog, and his last picture doesn't show the compass band with a GM engraving on it.
So i then checked the Chevymanuals online copy of the 1939 modern to the minute accessory catalog, and it shows the compass band without the GM aswell. That copy at Keith Hardy's website was donated Gene.

Doesn't this look like the one he bought from Dick Moffitt on 3/15, a repo. for $650? Look at his feedback on 3/15 and you will see It.

How about an asking price of $600.00 for a 41 generator on eBay? Or was it a starter? Can't remember. Anyhow, rare accessories are expensive. As would be expected. No surprise there. dance

Nonetheless, misrepresentation is another matter altogether.

Hm
crazy
I do not know how rich you people are in the States but $2,299 for a questionable compass!!!
The average person in Europe should be happy to earn that money per month!
