Can anyone tell me how to free up frozen emergency brake cables on my 47 Fleetline. Have been putting penetrating oil on the outside cable wrap hoping it will work itself inside.

Check out this web site. .http://www.instructables.com/id/Electrolytic-Rust-Removal-aka-Magic/ I have had good results with this method. I used it to unfreeze a trunk lid support mechanism on my 41 and some other parts. I also have a sandblast cabinet for cleaning up rusted parts, and this method is very easy for cleaning things up. I could see using both methods. Lightly,(lower pressure)sandblasting first then the electrolytic cleaning. I do have some extra brake cables in good condition for a 41. I don't know if they were the same in 47. Good luck, Mike

Mike Thanks for your response. Just went thru 2146 items under 40-48 Chev car & truck looking for NOS rear parking brake cables. Also did a search and the only thing I saw was a used set that looked rusty. Do you have an E-bay item listing number ? According to my parts book 41 will fit if I can't find the NOS at reasonable price.

Hi, here is item #. 220739440829. You could have also found it if you would have typed in the exact words that I gave you--
NOS 41-50 Chevrolet Rear Park Brake Cable 3691404
Looks like a great deal. Probably worth 50 to 100 dollars if there are no other sources. Let me know if you want a price from me on a good used one or set, and I will check what I have.
P.S. I use the following ebay search term to access parts for my car.

Mike FOUND IT - Thanks very much. We will see how the bidding goes. I didn't get a chance to check mine today to see if the oil did any good. Maybe if I'm really lucky they will free up. Thank goodness they are not stuck in the on position. I have a feeling I will be in touch with you later.

You can soak the cables in a plastic bucket and cover them with solvent.

Hi Dick, are you comfortable bidding on ebay? Have you developed a strategy that helps you win what you want? I doubt there are very many sources for this item so you need to establish what the item's value is to you? I probably would charge you atleast 30 dollars plus shipping if I were to sell you one of mine in good working condition? I won't promise you anything until I inspect what I have, and I'm not looking until I know you are interested? Give me a call if you need advice. 989-832-7634. I screen my calls so you might have to leave me a message and I can get back with you. Good luck, Mike
P.S. Soaking the cables in a lubricant, or some type of rust neutralizer is always the best thing to do first (I've even used molasses). I use a lot of WD40, and penetrants on bolts etc. Also I use a lot of heat on stubborn parts. It is always frustrating the first time you take things a part, so instead of screwing things up I use a propane torch or even a welding torch to free a bolt or screw. I look at each ORIGINAL screw, bolt, nut, etc as being something rare and reusable, not something I could break off and buy a new one. I also use anti seize when I reassemble things so they come a part easier. Good luck, Mike

Try doing a Google and Bing net search by GM part number. Do both sometimes the results for a given search term can be different. You should be able to find NOS or NORS without a problem. I have heard of companies that make up replacement cables. I recent found some NOS ones for a 48 3/4 ton.
