Just wondering what you guys with 41's are using for replacement rubber gravel shields on the rear fenders. The only ones I can find are glue-on without the metal back. Am I missing something?

The glue on shields from Chev of the '40s worked fine on my '41. Put them on in 1999. Still good. JIM

Could you peel the rubber off of your old shield and glue the new rubber onto it? Maybe heat it, or soak it in something, so it softens and would come off with a putty knife. Then sand blast the last of the residue? I'm going to try this before giving into gluing them on my fenders. I have a metallurgist friend I will have to ask his opinion? I'll have to check with my old parts and see if one of them would like to volunteer for me to try something on! Mike

That is my understanding of what you are supposed to do with the glue on's. Just glue them on to your old, cleaned up, bases.

I had an old fender I wanted to get in shape for resale so took off the fender shield and cleaned the rubber off of it. It was cracked a lot but I don't think that should matter. I took my propane torch to it. Took it outside and lit the rubber with the torch and let it burn itself real good. I then ignored it for about a half hour and the rubber pealed right off with a good stiff putty knife. IF it doesn't come off real easily do it again. Then I sand blasted it so it is ready for a new rubber pad. I would paint it with a good paint (POR 15, Rustoleum, etc.), before putting the pad on. I was surprised that it had some pitted rust areas on it?

One thing you want to be real careful with is not to break the tabs off. Take a picture of the tabs before you bend them. You want to rebend them in the same direction they originally were or they may break when you reinstall them.
