I have a Chevrolet 327 engine that I have had for a little more than 20 years. There are two steel stampings on the ID section. One in small steel stamps 18S193737 and one in a bit larger steel stamps of V0224HF. What can you tell me about this engine....

My info. shows the HF as a 1966-1967 275 HP 327 engine. This was the most common optional 327 engine for passenger cars. Should have a 4 bbarrel carburetor. They came with either a Rochester Quadrajet, Carter or Holley.

It was in a 1966 Corvette that I purchased that was T-boned and stored from the late 60's until I purchased. It came with an Edelbrock 3 X 2's manifold and carb setup with progressive linkage. The carbs are Rochesters. I was going to put it in the El Camino but I do not have the heart to change out an engine that is in an all original car. Do they have any value?

The V0224HF Breaks down as: V = Flint Engine or Flint V8 02 = February Build month 24 = 24th day of the month HF = Gene gave the answer
18S193737 identifies the vehicle it was installed in (VIN) 1 = Chevrolet Division identifier 8 = model year 1968 193737 = vehicle build sequence number
Interestingly, the last Chevrolet Passenger car assembled at the Stain Louis Plant in February of 1968 carried sequence number 194331. Your engine was installed in a vehicle 594 units before the last February build unit. That's pretty quick turn around when you think about the engine being built in Flint on 2-24-68 and installed in a vehicle at Saint Louis before the end of the month. Was 1968 a leap year? Even so, four or five days is quick.

The stamped engine number 18S193737 does not work for a 1968 Corvette. The 1968 Corvette numbers ranged from 8S400001 through 8S428566. Now if the serial number you listed is actally 6S, and not 8S, what I wrote earlier is meaningless.

No, I trust your data. I would expect that the 66 Corvette that I purchased was the recipient of an engine exchange. It is not a large leap to expect that somewhere along the way the engine was changed out.

The 275 HP engine was not available in a Corvette. The 300 HP was the base" The 275 came in the Full size car, Chevelle, ChevyII, and Camaro.
