A pal of mine just returned from a trip to Australia where he saw this RHD Chevrolet truck in the parking lot of a winery in the Yarra Valley. Can someone indentify the year--and maybe one of our Aussie mates who owns it--it's a beauty! Is it a Holden body with the Chevy radiator badge, or import from this side of the pond?

Hi Wino Wally I'm Bob owner of the chev 4 utility in the photo at Tokar Estate winery in the Yarra Valley. I was in the restaurant with my wife it is a pity your pal didn't ask the staff who owned it as they would have identified me and I would have been happy to spend some time with him.

It is a 1927 Chevrolet Capitol Tourer which was cut down in the early 1930's to a utility, a common practice for farmers of that era. It has a 1928 motor which was in it when I bought it I suspect it is original as the engine number was on the registration label which I still have. It was registered and in use until 1970. The tyres which are the same size that were on it when I got it are quite large at 5.25 x 21 rather than the 450's.

It needed total restoration and I have kept it as original and stock standard as possible all screws in timber are slot not phillips It will travel at 50mph on the flat but best between 35 and 45mph.

Sorry Wally didn't fully answer your question it is an Australian Chevrolet initially from country Victoria Mildura about 650 k from Melbourne and then Bendigo roughly 200k from Melbourne.

Not sure if it was a holden built body it is possible no indication of bodymake, the tray part no doubt was home made rather than holden or similar.

bobC4...

Isn't it amazing what a tiny world we have these days! To top it off, both my pal Tom and I have been to Mildura, and regularly correspond with friends there--it is the Sister City of the town he and I used to live in. Tom's son and family now live in Melbourne, so he and his wife visit regularly.

Thanks for the reply--I've sent it off to Tom. As you can see from my avatar, I'm a green truck guy too--but a 9-year newer '36!

Wally

bobc4's 1927 Chevrolet Capital Tourer - Photos

bobc4 emailed me some more photos of his truck, so I added them to my photo folder above, if anyone would like to check them out.

There is even a 'before' shot. He did a lot of work to it.

p.s. bobc4 - if you want me to take them down, let me know and I will.

There was a 29 Chevy pickup that had been a car as well where I grew up. It wasn't a roadster though. I'll try to find photos. The owners are long gone but I know their family.

Bobc should consider sending in an article for the G&D. It looks like he's got part, maybe most, of the story already written and maybe the photos ready to go along with it.

maybe some of you truck guys can help out on some parts sourcing.

bobc4 asked me this:

I don't know how it is for chev parts in the US probably similar to here, is there much chance of finding at least one possibly two rear drive hubs for my chev's disc wheels (not spokes which are different) either 1927/28 that are not worn out?

Hey Bob, I was at the Kalorama rally on Sunday and noticed your fine looking ute there on the day. It's great to see her out and about getting lots of use.

Well done mate.

Which club were you there with? I'm a member of the VDC.

Hi Bob, I was driving my 2004 Chevy Avalanche (4 door ute) so it was a bit new to get onto the oval.. LOL.

I've only just joined VDC and my 1929 Chev is nowhere near drivable and the 1930 model is even further than that away! At the moment the only drivable car I could have gotten onto the oval is my 1975 Cadillac Eldorado.

I live in Olinda so the rally was particularly easy to get to for me.

Bobc4:
There is information on the masthead page; usually about page 4 or 5, of the Generator and Distributor magazine.
