Does anyone know where I can find a good 31 chev cylinder head? "Good" meaning is has been verified that there are no cracks.

That is about as rare as a bull with wings. At any rate, check with Don Rossi in Colorado. He did have some good cylinder heads. No doubt the cylinder head will be very expensive if you do find one.

Good luck!

several years ago a friend had a cracked head from a 1939 mercedes supercharged straight eight repaired at a shop that specialized in diesel repair. it wasn't cheap, but one of those heads is unreplaceable. it worked very well. is that work still done anywhere?

I took mine to the local napa machine shop. It had three cracks. They sent it to a shop in Atlanta that specialized in this kind of repair. It cost me $500 for the repair and to rework the head. It's run for a year now with no problems.

I would suggest that you don't go there.

Ashame that someone doesn't make a run of these heads, as they always seem to be a problem.

Ya, we could sure use more of those type of cylinder heads. However, due to the extreme cost of casting new cylinder heads I doubt if anyone will ever make a run.

Are the 1930 and 1931 cylinder heads the same?

Took mine to the local National Bushing 3 yrs ago where they boiled out the head, fluxed, & welded a small crack by one of the seats. Working fine so far and I still have the good '29 head that was on the motor for emergency replacement.

I think I'm a fairly wise person because I'm smart enough to realise I'm not too bright.

Yes.

Do you have a 1929-32 Chevrolet parts book?

Thanks. My parts book is dated August 1931, but the listing for the cylinder head doesn't specify year.

1930 and 1931 heads are the same as J Y DOG has stated. 1929 head has different valves fitted, unique to 1929 only. 1932 head has different valves and rocker arm assemblies and they mount in a different position to increase the rocker arm ratio.

Yep, it sure does! I have the same parts book, and on page 2 of the August 1931 edition it specifies that the cylinder head fits both the 1930 and 1931 models.
