Recently purchased 1938 Fla license plate to display on the front bumper of my '38 coupe. I grew up in Fla in the late 40's, 50's and 60's and remember the first number representing the county and a "W" behind it if the car was "heavy" or more expensive. I lived in Clay County and the number for it during that time was "48".

The tag I bought has "9- 2-768" as its number. Anyone know what county number "9" was during 1938? Was there any significance for the "- 2-"?

Appreciate any input.

Bud

According to the book, "License Plate County Codes of the US & Canada", Dennis is correct, #9 = Escambia County.

"Starting in 1938 and continuing thru 1975, Florida used numeral prefixes to indicate the county of issue. County plates were issued in descending order of the number of vehicles registered in a county the previous year (1937). Escambia County had the 9th highest number of registration and therefor was assigned the number 9 prefix."

All you ever wanted to know....and more! crazy

Bud,

Mind ya this is just a GUESS. But my guess is the '2' is for 2000. In other words the license plate is number 2768 (two thousand seven hundred sixty-eighth) for the number 9 county, Escambia County.

As noted, just a guess....

Bill.
