Redoing the front brakes on my 1951. What is the purpose of the springs that go around the drums? Are they necessary?

They prevent the brakes from squeaking. The 11949 and 1950 were the first cars with bonded liningd. They had a loy of problems with squeaky brakes. They then used to springs to help eleminate the problem.
If you don't have the springs and your brakes don't squeak your home free. The modern material used on the shoes probably won't squeak.
