Hi Bengt, Does your friend have a manual for his 37? It will help him understand what parts get worn. Replacement parts are also available from
http://www.chevsofthe40s.com. They sell a rebuild kit for 37 for $89. It looks like a very good kit and would be a good starting point on rebuilding your steering box. I would also show your friend how to search our old posts on steering problems in our archives. Here is how:
So lets start by going through some easy steps to use the archive index. Under the SEARCH heading choose to do an ADVANCED search. Fill in the SUBJECT field . I think the 37-42 forum is the best (always check related forums)!!! Now fill in the DATE RANGE field. You will find once you have used the search process that only 50 responses will come back, so you need to create ranges that are small. So I would use this range first NEWER THAN choose "6 Months" and OLDER THAN "1 Week." This should bring up about 50 posts. After checking these then try NEWER THAN "1 Year" and OLDER THAN "6 months." You could do this back for 10 years with a variety of successes. What you will realize is that there are hundreds of posts covering this topic? If this helps you you can then break down your questions for us to make them more clear.
P.S. If you order from Chevys of the 40s ask them for a parts catalog. It is free and has excellent pictures of different components on cars, including a blow up of the 37 steering system and its parts. It makes a good backup to your manual, and sometimes the pictures are better than in a manual. Also remember we do have many manuals available on line, free for all to use.
Good luck, Mike
