Hi,
I bought this panel truck many years ago.I do not have any paperwork on this truck. I did go to DMV at the time, the vin was not on record.
The vin tag was bolted to the firewall when I got it. Anyone know where it should be located?
When and how do you get a vin verification in Ca.
Do I try to get it registered now or when I get it finished?
I believe that DMV will wont to know what it is worth. How do you figure that out. I paid $200 for it I doubt that they will accept that.
Thank you
Ed

Ok. This is a little shady in memory to me but first you have to know that the vehicle is fully functional and road worthy. Next step is to call the sherrif's office for vehicle inspection and they'll send someone out to inspect the truck and verify it's road safe. He'll write you a pink slip. I forget what the proper name of all of this paper work is, perhaps someone here will chime in. After inspection then you have to have insurance. This is were you will call an antique vehicle Apraiser. The fee here was 50 dallors but it's manditory. The apraiser will go over the vehicle with a bit more detail and then write you an apraisal. Next thing to do is aquire insurance for what the apraiser grants is worth. After that, take the pink slip and insurance proof to the DMV/BMV and from there a licence plate will be issued and a title generated. Thats that.

But...not having a Vin # could be a problem. Which would mean you cant plate the vehicle...

I think i would try to find a junk yard truck...one that doesnt run and obveously hasnt been on the road for years and a truck that will never see the road again and take the tag off it and rivet it back onto your truck. Ofcource the codes wont be right but you'll have a vin # and nobody would be able to tell the diference exept for you.

well if you have no title but do aparently have a vin # then you'll have to contact your sherrif's office to have a deputy come out and visually see that the vehicle is road worthy. Then like i said above, he will write you a slip. The next thing is to aquire insurance by the steps i mentioned above. Then take the slip the deputy wrote and proof of insurance and take that to the DMV. From there, a title should be generated and a plate issued.

AN APPOINTMENT----LOL
Here you just show up and wait your turn.
Im sure it will all work out. If you have had this a long time and have not paid the sales tax you are in BIG trouble. I would try to find out all info BEFORE you tell them who you are. They tried to collect 35 yrs of interest on the $25 sales tax I didn't pay back when.
I had to change my statement s a little to get around it. Took many trips but when all the t's were crossed I got my plates.

You probably want to have the serial number plate attached to the cowl before you take it down. Having the tag loose is no good. They'll ask more questions that you won't have the right answers to. I think that tag was attached to the cowl near the RH leg or right around there. Look for some screw holes...Joe
