Can anyone suggest where I can obtain brake linings of a softer material as per the original. Preferably in Australia, but if not in the USA.
The Filling Station has nothing, same with Gary Wallace, and Vintage Auto Parts has from 29 onwards. Can any 29 owners tell me if 29 linings will fit 28 shoes.
Regards
Ray

Hi Ray,
You might want to try a commercial/industrial brake shop. One that doesn't specialize in automotive brakes necessarily, but in industrial applications. I took the brake shoes for my '30 to a local shop here in Cincinnati, and told them I needed soft, woven linings. They measured the shoes and old linings, and in less than two weeks I had my brakes. For about $12.50 per shoe. Brakes work great! But they do squeel a little.
Happy Motoring,
Dan

Dan-I also took my brakes for my 31 to a commercial shop and the brakes work great and YES they still sqeal and are embarassing at times. It is only the front brakes that make noise. I removed the drums and took a three cornered file and filed cross hatch grooves, used air pressure and blew them off, then sprayed linings and drums with brake clean and the noise is gone, but will probably return when the dust builds back up and fills the grooves. It would be nice if some entrepreneur would start making cast iron drums for our old Chevies like they do for F$%Ds

You might try All Friction in Portland, Ct. USA. I had them reline the front brake shoes for my 28 recently they did a great job bonding a softer lining material. You can reach them at phone # 860-342-2001 or email - info@allfriction.com They can't rivet the shoes but did a nice job. The shoes cam back within a week cleaned painted and bonded. Good luck Norm J

Ray I drive my 28 on the steep mountain trails of West Virgina -- they call them roads-- and the brakes are much improved over the hard linings. They still need some waring in since I did not turn the drums but did rebuild the adjusters, so I am still in the break in period with only 30 miles since the brake work. I expect more improvement.
