I have a used four cylinder engine short block that I would like to identify so I can sell it. It does not have the mounting for the semi automatic spark control that started in 1927. The casting number is 346709, the casting date is F 17 28 with the stamping ID of 2547017. It has aluminum pistons. Can anyone help me out. Thanks.

Hi, Roger -

Your Casting Number 346709 shows up as a 1926 Canadian block at this site (scroll down to 1926):

http://www.btinternet.com/~gmhistorian/CANADIAN1915-30.doc

Your Casting Date of F 17 28 of course means June 17, 1928. Which is confusing.

Casting Number 348709 (an "8" in third position, not a "6") shows up here:

http://home.znet.com/c1937/Cast.htm

as a 1927 US block. Any chance that 6 is an 8?

Aliminum pistons would indicate 1928, although they could have been changed in the last 80+ years, of course.

Both of the referenced sites are also listed on these forums under "Mr Goodwrench" then "Tech Talk" then "Hot Links" number 4 and number 7.

Nice to see people read our website!

I think you'll find that the casting date code is F 17 6 or 26 as the # 346709 is a '26 Superior Series V engine and the serial number fits in with that as well.

Thanks guys
I went out and checked the date code again and David was correct. The code was F 17 26. The 6 was really poorly cast. Thanks for the help.
