My '47 Fleetmaster 216...Suddenly developed an intermittent "Knock"...seems to come from cyl.#5 or thereabouts...only at idle...and the sound is a loud hollow "CLOCK"...it is not consistent..once every 4 or 5 seconds..sometimes not...raise rpm and its gone! Motor oil is clean

Possible sticking valve. You can pour some Marvel Mystery oil down through the throat of the carburetor with the engine running or remove the valve cover and squirt some (thru the valve spring) on the valve stems/guides of that cylinder.
At that time tou could also observe the push rod.rocker arm movement witht the engine running.

I guess I'm lucky enough not to know what the sound of a "rod knock" is...rocker arm cover is off at this moment...its been rebuilt recently..really clean! Machining two new Washer/Bushing deals for the cover (out of Delrin) old ones just fell apart.

Just at thought, with the valve cover off and engine running, carefully grab esch push rod with two fingers and keep it from turning. see if that stops your knock. you may have a bent push rod and every time it goes around its hitting the engine side pan. this happened to me after the valves were adjusted and one was alittle too tight and bent the push rod just enough to hit part of the engine side pan. That caused my knock to come and go.
