I just received my packing from the Filling Station
I was expecting it to be in a string or rope shape, but it looks like a washer.

My question is do I have to remove the fan or can I split the packing and install it in two pieces ?

Have not gotten packing from FS so don't know exactly what they sent. Can you open up the ring, slide it over the shaft and then reform it back into a ring? If so that may be the best bet. If not then you will need to take the pump apart to get it on the shaft. I would not split it into two pieces unless that is the last resort.

I would not advise splitting the packing as you leave an opening for a potential leak. The best way to do it is to dis-assemble the pump and unscrew the packing nut and re-pack. During that time would also be opertunity to check for a wore pump shaft and bushings.

Thank you for the information

The packing ring has a split in it I will see if it can be opened enough to go around the shaft

if not then I will order another one to replace it if I damage it

I agree with OilSpot. The best way to replace the packing is to disassemble the pump. That way you can inspect the pump shaft for wear as well as the impeller and the bushings.
