The coils were mounted with the wires to the bottom through 1958. In 1959 the mounting was reversed with the wires being on top. This solved two long running problems. The coil wire falling out of the center of the coil and the oil (transformer oil) leaking out of the coil. Its not unusual to find an earlier model with the coil reversed.

That is right Gene, I had a 49 Chevy in high school and that wire would fall out every now and then.

This is probably one of the longest ongoing threads on here, BUT today it will come to an end!
Wow....after a year and 20+ hours of tinkering, replacing the entire fuel and ignition system and just plalin banging my head on the hood (literally sometimes) I'm proud to announce that the 52 Styleline is running w/o the rough acceleration again!
It appears (as many have suggeseted on multiple forums) that the points were bad. Today I tried a 3rd set from an American manufacturer vs. the Chinese ones I was getting ordered through AutoZone and it roared to life like a loyal dog happy to have it's owner home :)
I can't thank everyone enough for the advice, guidance and motivation. If not for these forums alot more antique cars would be in the scrap pile. :toast:
