Does anyone have the max. allowable dimensions for turning front and rear brake drums on a '56 P/U? I have a shop manual on order but need the info now.

If you need your drums turned take them to a machine shop that does that kind of work. They have a gauge that will determine if the drums can be turned. If the drums have already been turned to their limit the shop will tell you so. The shop that I use will gauge them and if they have already reached their limit they will refuse to turn them.

This makes the assumption that the brake service shop has the data for the older drums. In most cases, a far stretch.

Just trying to be helpful, no assumption was made. It may be a "far stretch" in your area, we don't have that problem here.

Every machine shop around here that turns drums has the specs for maximum drum ID even for the 30s and forties. Most of our Auto supply stores has a sign "We turn rotors and drums" the smaller stores send them out.
There is a band that is used on the older drums to keep them from vibrateing during the turning or grinding operation. If a machine operator fails to band up your older drums (thinner ones) he don't know enough to do the job.

This doesnt answer your question i know but i just wanted to add that SOME brake shops out there are still knowlageable about turning drums for our older cars but those shops are becoming FEWER and far(er) between each day, it seems.

Scary thing is that some machine shops of today lack the same knowlage.

So be careful whom you take drums too.

That same drum was used on the rear of 1970 full sized cars so look at the specs for that. Usually .080" is the recommended limit.

Turn out that the limit is 0.060" oversize. Chevy made linings 0.060" oversize to match this limit. This is from the shop manual which finally arrived.
