I was helping out a friend this morning, and his gas filler tube leaks. Have the tank out of the car ('36 Sedan). The filler tube is a two piece combination with a ring holding them together. When we flushed water down the neck, it leaked at the joint.

Question 1) Is the joint threaded? It sort of looks like it is. If so, can we just turn on the ring to get it to separate?

Question 2) Is there any sort of gasket that is suppose to be between these two tubes?

Question 3) What are we missing? Why is this leaking? Is it normal to leak on an original car? Any other suggestions?

Thanks! talk

Bill,This will not be of much help but the parts book shows a filler neck coupling gasket and if it is a sedan with a trunk an extra coupling was also used to extend the filler neck.Aseal is also shown.

Bill, It is in my 1939 parts book. The same should be in any 1936 thru 1941 parts books .These type of things usually are not shown in shop manuals, body manuals etc.I even checked in the 1936engineering manual--no luck.

Okey Dokey... we'll jump on it. Thanks!! talk

We're trying to get the car on the road for the trip to Victoria, Canada
for the NW Meet in 3 weeks... yipp

I'll give The FIlling Station and Chev of the 40's a call to see if they have the gasket... I assume that it will be sort of special since it needs to be impervious to gas. auto :cool2:

I'm still putting Liquid Wrench on the joint on the filler tube hoping it will free up so I can take it apart and see what needs to be done to get a good seal back at the joint. So far it's Rust 1 Jim 0. curse :(
